Yay or Nay Film Review - The Irish Man

This is my review of the Irish Man. So let's talk about the main cast Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, oh and by the way you know that guy, that actor who's retired: Joe Pesci, yeah we are going to get him and we are going to put him in the movie. Pow! That is a powerful cast.

So the movie is three and a half hours long but don't let that put you off, this is a great movie I watched it over two evenings and the thing that really saved this movie is the pacing. The scenes did not drag, the acting was exquisite, and the reason I say the acting is exquisite is because the three leads in this movie are masters of their craft, as a viewer you are just at ease watching these masters do what they do best. If anyone reading this is a lover of history, specifically 1960’s America, then you will thoroughly enjoy this movie.

Lets look at some highlights from the movie. The prison scene, Al Pacino's prison scene with the ice cream was gripping, also towards the end where Robert De Niro see’s the consequences of his actions and his family no longer wants to be associated with him, he is deteriorating. You know it's just sad to see him without a support system in his final years on this earth.

The only aspect of the movie that did not work for me was the de-aging. As a view when you first come across the de-aging technology it is somewhat of a distraction and it looks uncanny, however after a few minutes you get used to it. Another of the major criticisms of the film was that the movie is too long, and if given the chance I would have cut some of Hoffa’s (Al Pacino) scenes, and the reason I say this is because throughout the movie it is made quite clear that Hoffa is a stubborn son of a gun, politically and ideologically, he’s not moving!

To be fair the scenes were interesting, so as a compromise some of the scenes could have been shorter, and as a result this could have shaved a few minutes off the movie. I commend Martin Scorsese because he could have easily given up on the idea of having Al Pacino, De Niro and Pesci play the characters from a young age right up until like their late eighties, but he he kept this movie on the back burner and he was waiting for the technology to come along.

To conclude this is a good movie, like I said the acting is exquisite. So now is the moment of truth. Is this movie a Yay or Nay… This movie is a Yay. Have you watched the Irishman? If so, what did you think of the movie? If you have not watched the movie, why not? Let me know in the comments down below.
