Creativity can come from outside sources
Creativity can come from outside sources
Creativity is an illusive intangible that comes from within, even though creativity comes from within, we can look to outside sources to get inspiration which in turns sparks creativity.
This is a lesson I first learnt in my third year of undergrad. At the time I was studying media (communications for American readers) and I was in a Visual production lecture series. During the lecture series we had a guest lecturer called john, he has his own production company, so we were literally getting taught by a top professional in the industry.
John told us a story. He said that when he was in university that he used to intern at a production company, and everyday the interns had to read through all the newspapers and magazines available to them, and if there were any articles that caught the interns interest, they would cut the article out and put it in a pile. once all the interns had finished, they would go through the pile and check if any of these articles could be a basis for a show.
If the article fit the criteria, the interns would write up a treatment (a treatment is a short synopsis of a tv show, movie or documentary that is used to pitch to commissioners, such as Netflix, ITV, HBO, ABC, BBC etc ) and present it to the producers at the production company, if the producers liked what they read, they would take the treatment to a commission meeting, with the aim of getting funding for the project.
John encouraged us to partake in this practice of reading everything, in order to find ideas that could inspire a project. Again this goes back to the idea that outside sources, such as newspapers and magazines can inspire one to be creative. Other outside sources include life, books, documentaries etc.
In fact when I wrote my one man show: White Board, Black Pieces: Race In The West, an outside source inspired me to write the show. If you would like to know the specifics, check out the YouTube link to my one man show below. In my show I explain how I got the idea to write my one man show.
In 2020 a movie called ‘Dark Waters’ starring Mark Ruffalo and Anne Hathaway, was released, this movie was based on a New York Times Magazine article called: "The Lawyer Who Became DuPont's Worst Nightmare" by Nathaniel Rich. If you have not watched this movie I would advise you do so, it is a slow burn.
The most wonderful thing about using outside sources, is that it takes the pressure off you having to come up with all the ideas yourself.
